Short Row Heel (from the pattern)
Ok - I read the pattern - the instructions for the heel - and all I have to say is "WHAT????" I didn't find it very easy to understand.
Sooooooooo....
here is the way I am going to interpret it.
Because I don't think the instructions are very clear, I have to make a couple of decisions.
First I have to know/decide that I am going to work on the heel for 1/2 of my stitches.
Second since it says to work the short row heels on the knit stitches, I will begin working them when I am at the end of the back side (not the ribbing side) of the sock. The ribbing side will be the instep.
Ok - now that I have made those two decisions - I will knit to the end of the back of the sock MINUS ONE STITCH!

Bring the yarn forward as if to purl, slip the last stitch.

turn your work and slip the stitch back again, - so that the yarn wraps around it.

See the little noose?

Purl back to the 2nd to last stitch - bring the yarn in front as if to knit - slip the last stitch turn.
See the noose around this stitch?

Once you have 4 turning stitches on each side of the heel - you will start picking them up. Knit to the first turning stitch (you know it is 4th from the end) then knit the stitch AND THE YARN THAT IS WRAPPING AROUND IT. Picking up the stitches this way will prevent holes in the short rows.
Here is the wrapped stitch.

Pick up the (neck) wrapping part.

Pick up the stitch too. And Knit them together!

You will do the same thing on the purl stitches. I have a hard time with this one - so I will slip the stitch, grab the noose and put it on my needle and then purl the two together. Just do whatever works for you.

It is easy to tell where you need to pick up these stitches because there will be a little space between two of the stitches.

Once you have picked up all the stitches (going back and forth) - you have your short row heel.

After I did this tutorial - I realized that this is NOT the way I normally wrap my stitches.
See what happens when you blindly follow a pattern?
I usually wrap from back to front - For example; on a knit row, I knit to the stitch to wrap; slip it to my right needle, bring the yarn to the front and then slip the stitch back to the left needle and THEN turn my work.
For purl stitches I do it differently too - I purl to the stitch to wrap - slip it, bring the yarn to the back, slip the stitch back to the left needle and then turn my work. It actually makes it a little easier to pick up the wraps with the stitches.
But both methods do the same thing.
Really.
I am too tired to post pictures of that method - just trust me - it is a little easier and it is the way that I do it.
